Chapter Seven

Jack

I stand against the truck until the ship pulls away from the dock, a pressure building in my chest as I watch everything I don’t deserve, everything I want to protect sail away.

“A few weeks and that same ship’ll be right back here,” a voice says, startling me from the guilt. “Until then, help me with these boxes.”

I can tell it’s Evelyn before I turn. Aside from her signature sarcasm, her voice is distinctive and muddy, like she’s been smoking a pack a day for forty years, though I’ve never seen one smoke in her hand.

“Hey Eve,” I say turning to help her with the boxes of vodka that easily outweigh her.

“You just down here feeling sorry for yourself?”

I manage a smile. “Something like that.”

“Thought you said you weren’t falling for anyone? That was the rule, right? Keep to yourself, don’t let anyone in.” She smiles and slams the tail gate of her truck closed.

“It’s complicated.”

“Complicated as in what? You told that sweet girl about your past and she’s deciding if she can deal with it, or—”

“That would’ve been nice of me. Couldn’t seem to spit it out though.”
